Vomit City

Friday, October, 2010

I had big dreams of posting a few times this week.

Then the vomit came.  Along with its best buddy, diarrhea.

Seriously.  Five days of vomit and diarrhea is enough to drive anyone mad.

BUT…it has given me a great idea for a Halloween costume.  After Aiden threw up down my shirt tonight I thought that I could be a barf bowl!!!    I could make a giant garbage can/bowl and have stringy crepe paper flowing into it from the top of my head.

Or, at the rate we are going here, I could just carry Champers while trick-or-treating and have him do the real deal.

Introducing Geographic Tongue!

Thursday, September, 2010

I love showing nasty, icky pictures that might help someone learn something new.  I promise not to disappoint in this post!!

Back in August I noticed Champers had something white on his tongue.  I was a bit alarmed that it might be thrush.  His child well visit was in a few days so we decided to wait until then to discuss with the most wonderful pediatrician, Dr. Shakula.  Well….it disappeared by that appointment.  Yay, right?

Last week I noticed more funky white stuff on his tongue accompanied with a perfect circle next to a wavy line.  It was FREAKY looking.  Thankfully, the children needed flu shots so we rushed up to Dr. Shakula.

After our traumatic flu shots were administered (it really stinks having a needle phobic child, BTW), Dr. Shakula examined the tongue that had ALL READY changed since I looked at it in the morning!!  Apparently, we can continue to expect this kind of fun with Champers tongue because he has been officially diagnosed with geographic tongue

This is quite the interesting phenomena.  It is benign but chronic.  It appears and disappears frequently and rapidly.  It can cause some discomfort but rarely pain.  It is three times more frequent in females than males.  And with everything else in life….oftentimes is comorbid with excema, allergies, and asthma (Champers has two out of three of those!).

So, without further ado…………..Geographic Tongue!  (courtesy of Wikipedia)

I really think we should share this information and photos with young women who frequent our house during Champers teenage years…what say ye?

Venting away

Thursday, September, 2010

I am a firm believer in venting anger.  It is so wonderful to do in healthy ways!  Well, today my friends, you are going to be my own private therapy.

I HATE it when people brake….constantly….on the freeway.

I was stuck behind one such driver this morning.  Noone in front of him/her.  Driving the speedlimit.  No officers around.  Yet, the braking occurred every minute.  It was as though this person did not know how to drive without a little tap-tap-a-roo on the brake pedal.

Of course I was stuck behind this friend for several miles!!!  ARRGH.

Thanks for listening.

Starting Work….Again

Sunday, August, 2010

I start working this week.  It is something I never look forward to.

The truth is….I LOVE being a stay at home mother.

I know that this is only 19 hours (less if I want) a week.  This still seems so overwhelming to me.

Pray for me everyone!

Educational Neglect

Thursday, August, 2010

Sometimes, doing the right thing for children is hard.

Take bedtime for example.  Last night we went to a BBQ across the street.  The children ran and played and swam and had a great time.  We came home about an 1 1/2 hours after bedtime.  I was tired, Dan was tired and we just let the kids run around crazy for 20 minutes.  Even though things would have been easier for he and I in the long run, we lacked the energy to put them to bed immediately.

Another area this happens is attending school. I have always been amazed at how many parents do not encourage their children to get to school.  And, more often than not, it is a result of parents not wanting to put forth the effort in waking up, waking their child(ren) up, getting them ready and out the door.  It also is frustrating to see how far behind so many of these kiddos get in school. Of course, this leads to the student having more absences because they do not like seeing their peers on a different academic level.

*Did you know that a child can not be qualified in special education if there is an attendance problem?  It is impossible to determine whether the student has a need that would require qualification if they aren’t at school learning.

It can also be considered a form of neglect under many state child welfare laws.

So, long story short:  Get your child to school regularly and on time!

Working away!

Champers making a garden!

As a child I believed my mother was getting off easy by having us (me and my sibs) help clean the house.  Now as a mother, I realize that it is a pain in the hiney to have children do chores.  With the shoddy job that is done and constantly supervising the work it is easier to do it myself!!

BUT

….it is so important for a child to have regular chores.  Children develop solid work habits, a knowledge of how to clean, better attention skills, and even self-esteem.  With all this in mind, I have used this summer to help my children with some chores.  Bud is learning how to:

  • Put his own clothing away after laundry
  • Clean the toilets
  • Clear the table after dinner
  • Load the dishwasher
  • Clean the baseboards weekly

My Pumpkin is learning how to:

  • Wipe off the table after dinner
  • Put her clothing away after laundry
  • Keep her room clean
  • Dust

Both children also help gather the garbage each week.  I also allow Champers to wipe down anything he wants and praise him for such wonderful cleaning.  I am hoping this will help me transition him into chores a year down the line or so.  He likes to help me clean the bathrooms.  That is fun!! ;)

It is a SLOW process for me but I am hoping that it will be well worth the work!!

Bud working hard!

Hello!!

Saturday, July, 2010

So, you can see that below are some very old posts that I created about a year ago.  Fun to see old stuff, huh?  Keep with me folks and we’ll get this boat up and running!

For my first post I want to talk about….EXERCISE!!!  Yay!!!

I have never had a love affar with working out.  I have to force myself to do it .  But, as with all things in life, it is ALL about ATTITUDE.

For the past two weeks, I have changed my thinking to….”I get to work out today!!”

What a difference it has made.

  1. I have worked out five days a week for the past two weeks.  Plan on doing that again next week.
  2. I have lost about 1.5 pounds!
  3. My tummy is comin’ on in!
  4. I feel good!!!

The best part is that my children are learning that taking care of yourself is a good thing.  I don’t want them to struggle with this working out thing like I have.  I want to teach them that this is a great part of life!

This is an ongoing goal for me, so please note that I will probably post my progresses along the way!!

Dating Safety

Thursday, June, 2009

Whenever I am talking to a young woman about dating I ALWAYS give her the following tip:

Check the Sex Offender Registry!!!!!  Do it before you go out with a guy.  It sounds scary AND unrealistic.  I mean, really?  C’mon Amber!!!   99.9% of the time Mr. Cute will not be on there because he’s okay.  But, won’t you be thankful for that .01% of the time he is?

Dust mites on a bedsheet

Dust mites on a bedsheet, originally uploaded by Ethan Hein.

My Bud is allergic to these little fellas. In an effort to make our house a little more lung friendly, I am learnin’ up on dust mites.

INFESTATION!!

Monday, May, 2009

Doesn’t the word infestation create cold chills and shivers up and down your body?  How about if I throw in the words “Black Widow?”

Well, that has been the story here at Catching Aiden Headquarters.  Yes, folks, we have a plethora of black widows and it creeps me out!  Why, might you ask?  I have been fearing for the life of my precious little clan as I have heard the many myths behind the infamous spider.  I was just sure that one little nibble would be sending us to the emergency room…or worse!

So, we sprayed poison like crazy and sure enough, I no longer saw the creepy critters.  That was until this week.  Sure enough, Theey’re Baaaack!  Gah!!  What to do???

First, I hit the internet.  Apparently these ladies aren’t as horrific as I once believed.  Though the female black widow is the most venemous spider in the United States, she seldom imjects enough poison to cause death.  Phew!  That is a mild relief.   And, according to http://www.calpoision.org.  Noone has died in over 10 years in the United States from a black widow spider bite, even more of a relief!

Black widows LOVE dark quiet places to hang aound.  Because of this you can take some simple steps to prevent an infestation.  (Ours is due to moving into a brand new house in a new neighborhood.  You can guarantee to have many if you fall into this category and will definitely want to listen up!!)

First, the best prevention is to keep items sealed.  Do not have open boxes, bags with holes, shoes/boots hanging out in the garage.

Second, avoid having tall grasses, weeds, shrubs, woodpiles, garbage, etc. near the house.

Third, consistently check the dark, out-of-the-way corners in your garage, meter boxes, sheds.  If found, the spider may need a pounding or two (or four in my cases) before she perishes.  Also, use the sticky insect pads which are more effective at extermination then sprays.  It will also help determine the quantity of spiders you have.

Finally, check absolutely EVERYTHING before you bring it into the house.  Black widows prefer to be away from human infested homes but will find a corner if we bring them in!

If you or someone else in the fam. does happen to be bitten, here’s what you do.  DO NOT panic.  Wash the wound with soap and water.  Apparently it is not always necessary to seek medical care.  You do want to seek medical care, however, if the victim (yes, I consider the poor person a victim) has more than minor pain OR has whole body pain.  If the symptoms are severe call 911.  Go  here  for a complete article on black widow bites or here  for symptomatology.
